What is microneedling?

Microneedling uses fine needles to create controlled punctures in the skin. What it is intended to address depends on the specific device and treatment protocol used.

Device-specific details are confirmed at your consultation, before any treatment is recommended.

Questions worth asking.

Is microneedling the same as acne treatment?

They are different conversations. Acne care focuses on active breakouts, while microneedling is a separate discussion about skin texture, including the appearance of acne scars. If breakouts are active, your team may suggest focusing on them first. That recommendation is made at your consultation.

How does it differ from care for dark marks?

Dark marks left after a breakout are a pigmentation concern, while texture changes affect how the surface of the skin looks and feels. They can appear together, and which care fits depends on what your team sees at your consultation. You can read more about marks and pigmentation.

What should I disclose if I use prescription skincare?

Tell us about everything you use or have recently used, including prescription skincare, other medications and any relevant treatment history. Also mention skin sensitivity and any health conditions our team should know about, such as a bleeding disorder, use of blood thinners, eczema, diabetes or a weakened immune system. Your team reviews all of this before recommending a next step. Do not stop or change prescribed medication unless your prescribing clinician tells you to.

How many treatments might I need?

That depends on the treatment recommended at your consultation. Your team explains the plan before you decide.

What will it cost?

Your consultation confirms what applies to your recommended treatment. You can also review our pricing page for how care is purchased.

Possible effects and risks.

Microneedling is a procedure, and effects vary from person to person. Based on FDA consumer information, short-term effects can include redness, bruising, bleeding, tightness, itching and peeling, and skin may be more sensitive to sun and to some skincare products afterward. Less common risks include stinging from products, dark or light skin spots, cold sore flare-ups, swollen lymph nodes and infection.

Individual results vary, results may fall short of expectations, and not everyone is a candidate. The exact risks and aftercare depend on the device and protocol confirmed at your consultation.
