SKIN HEALTH / POST-ACNE DARK MARKS

The breakout has gone. The mark is still here.

Dark marks can linger after acne or irritation. At ACN Co., we help you understand your next care step and when a dermatologist's assessment belongs in the plan.

If breakouts have settled but color remains, your next question may be about marks rather than active acne. Explore Smooth Over to understand how we separate tone concerns from texture concerns, then bring your questions to a consultation.1

WHY YOUR SKIN MAY LOOK LIKE IT IS STILL BREAKING OUT

The breakout may be gone.
The mark can still look like acne.

Seeing spots in the mirror can make it hard to recognize progress. Some spots may be leftover discoloration rather than a current breakout. Active acne and lingering marks can also be present together—so the next step is understanding what you are seeing.

ACTIVE BREAKOUT

Inflammation or a clogged pore

Acne can include inflamed bumps, whiteheads or blackheads. Color alone cannot tell you whether acne is still active.

LINGERING MARK

A change in color

A flat dark mark can remain after a breakout resolves. This may be post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Some residual redness has a different explanation.

SCAR

A change in texture

Indented or raised scars are a different concern from a flat mark. Both can occur in the same area and may need different care.

Simplified illustrations, not diagnostic images. Actual appearances vary across skin tones; not all acne is raised and not all discoloration is pigmentation.

Visible marks do not tell the whole progress story.

Your team can help distinguish current breakouts from what is left behind, so your routine addresses the concern you actually have.

LOOK AT THE WHOLE PICTURE

Work on what comes next.
And what keeps coming back.

If breakouts are continuing, your care conversation should include both active acne and the marks left behind. Irritation from skincare can also contribute to dark spots.

How our acne care works

Help protect the progress you’re making.

A breakout can settle before the mark it leaves behind fades. Avoid picking or squeezing, which can increase the risk of dark marks and scars. Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher sunscreen, along with shade and sun-protective clothing, to help protect your skin.

If you are unsure whether you are seeing active acne, lingering discoloration, or a change in skin texture, we can help you understand the next step.

A PRACTICAL ROUTINE

Protect. Simplify. Review.

01 / PROTECT

Make sun protection part of care.

Use broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30 or higher. For dark spots, ask about a tinted sunscreen containing iron oxide, which adds visible-light protection.

02 / SIMPLIFY

Keep the routine manageable.

Your provider can help you consider gentle cleansing, moisturizing and an appropriate targeted product without adding unnecessary steps.

03 / REVIEW

Give your team useful feedback.

Tell us about tolerance, new breakouts and changes you notice. Those conversations help shape your next recommendations.

These are care-planning priorities, not instructions for applying products in a specific order.

PROTOCOL-INFORMED CARE / PROPOSED SERVICE MENU

Professional care should match the concern.

We consider active breakouts, remaining discoloration and skin tolerance together. These are proposed ACN Co. menu options drawn from the supplied protocols; your provider decides which, if any, is appropriate.

Face Reality · Bright Skin Peel 1

Bright Skin Peel

The professional protocol begins with cleansing and a treatment-tolerance check before peel selection. It includes appropriate extraction care when indicated and a protective finish. A hydrating alternative is used when skin does not tolerate the preparation.

Why discuss it: For provider-assessed suitability; a peel is not the default answer to every mark.

Lira Clinical · Brightening Excellence

Brightening Facial

A professional facial that combines cleansing, exfoliation, targeted serum care and hydration, finishing with sun protection. The supplied protocol includes Lactic Clear and MYSTIQ iLuminating Polisher, with provider-selected finishing products.

Why discuss it: For a consultation about uneven-looking tone and texture. Intensity and suitability are assessed first.

Expect a conversation—not a countdown.

Fading takes time, and the pace varies. We do not promise a particular number of visits or a fixed clearing date. Your team can discuss expectations after assessing your concerns.

Marks and texture need different conversations.

Flat discoloration and a change in skin texture are different concerns. If acne has left textural scars, ask about our microneedling service. We assess current breakouts and suitability before considering treatment.

Questions we can work through together.

Does a lingering mark mean my acne treatment did not work?

Not necessarily. Discoloration can remain after a breakout has settled. New acne can also continue alongside older marks. Your provider can help review each concern rather than assuming every visible spot needs more acne treatment.

Can I have acne and dark marks at the same time?

Yes. The consultation can address current breakouts and the discoloration left by previous ones. They should not be treated as unrelated shopping decisions.

Do dark marks mean I have scars?

Not necessarily. Flat discoloration and changes in texture are different. A clinician can help clarify what you are seeing.

Is a peel always the next step?

No. Your skin's tolerance and history matter. We discuss whether professional exfoliation, home-care changes or medical evaluation is appropriate.

Is Accure Laser Therapy offered for pigmentation?

Accure Laser Therapy is for inflammatory acne, not a pigmentation or scar-removal service. We will not direct you to it solely because you have dark marks. Accure Laser Therapy is available only at Louisville Advanced. Appointments begin after January 1, 2027. Consultation required before treatment.

Where do I start?

Book a consultation and bring your current product list and questions. We will explain the available options and costs before you decide.
